B3. Goodnight
* Recorded in Sheffield by P.J. Oldfield on 22-23 February 1986.
Sleevenotes:
Dogs Are Everywhere: Recent evidence shows that man is a direct
descendant of the Dog, rather that the ape, as had previously been
believed. Some are closer to their roots than others.
The Mark Of The Devil: A disease that can strike at any age. How
it is caught is a mystery but when one day you look in the mirror and
see that mark upon your face... It's a sickener.
97 Lovers: Why 97? It could just have easily been 970 or 9,700.
Just take a short walk around town and you'll soon lose count of the
deformities. By the way, what's that growing on your back?
Aborigine: A real kitchen-sink drama. This kind of thing happens
all the time, and it leaves a nasty stain on the shag-pile.
Goodnight: Zzzzzzzzzzz.

* Recorded at the Sheffield Input Studio during June 1986.
Sleevenotes:
Tunnel; - The True Story. I first entered the tunnel on the tenth of
July 1985. It was a sunny day, just a few rolled-out wispy clouds, and I
was wearing my best suit. I saw the entrance and went in - simple as
that. I had nothing else to do; I was bored. That was fifteen weeks ago
and guess what? - I'm lost, it's so bleeding dark in here, that's the
problem. But I'm not alone, - oh no, there must be hundreds, perhaps
thousands, down here with me. We all mill around and bump into each
other in the darkness. And the stench of a thousand unwashed bodies
hangs in a thick fog. That's city dirt, Fanny. I walk for at least eight
hours every day but I've still never seen even the slightest glimmer of
light that would tell me I was nearing the end of the tunnel. Most of
the others are content to just walk on the spot and hum to themselves,
but I still make the effort. Hoping that one morning I will wake up in
the sun with the sky blue above me. And to be clean again. But I know
I'll never be clean again.

Sleevenotes:
Now listen; these freaks we're talking about, they're just normal people
gone a bit wrong, that's all. Something happened to them and they never
got over it. Now they walk around in a daze with twisted innards and
blank faces, wanting to join in but too scared to make the jump. It's
sad but don't bother crying; they still eat and drink and watch T.V.
just like anyone else. And they smoke.

'Master Of The Universe' - an explanation:
He was God and she was His congregation. But when she lost her faith, He
lost His power. Now the thigh-length boot's on the other foot. (You
might think it's funny, but someone's always got to be the boss.) This
record marks the end of Pulp #3. Pulp #4 will follow shortly.

...so we finally made it into orbit (good, innit?). But like the man
said "Space is O.K. but I'd rather get my kicks down below." One
re-entry later and now it's a choice between an extra hour in bed or
stopping the love of your life from getting on the next train out of
town. Took too long deciding what shirt to wear and blew it. But hold
on, who's this walking out of the sun? It can't be - but it is. Talk
about leaving it till the last minute. O.U. jammy get..

The following notes (written by Bob Stanley, founder of the Caff label)
were included on an insert: "Pulp. From Sheffield. Sex City. And yes,
that probably explains why 'My Legendary Girlfriend' is such a
bottomless pit of seething sauciness. This version was recorded live
with a so-called friend of the group whining his little head off at the
front. A uniquely tense performance. On the reverse side we have 'Sickly
Grin' (complete with tape deterioration) from 1982, and a fine rocker
called 'Back In LA' from 1985, where Pulp let off steam after the
miserablism of the 'Freaks' LP. Jarvis Cocker, eugenius. Goodnight, Bob

Babies: Yes it happened years ago on some damp acrylic afternoon.
I know you got your own back years later (that's another story) but it
wasn't such a big deal anyway - in those days you packed people rather
than divorced them. I liked it that way and I still do, but then again,
I'm imma.
Styloroc: Happening at a cul-de-sac near you.
Sheffield: Sex City: The morning after "My Legendary Girlfriend".
Trying to get things done but ending up on a tour of the fleshpots of
Sheffield in a T-reg Chevette. Wybourn, Brincliffe, Intake - All these
places really do exist and maybe those adventures still happen there - I
don't know; I don't live there anymore.

Razzmatazz... the bits that "Hello" leaves out.
Inside Susan "A story in three songs..."...following Susan from
her Rotherham puberty through wild teen years in Sheffield to her
eventual marriage and settling down somewhere on the outskirts of
London. I played these songs to Susan the other day - she just laughed
and said I was being spiteful because she wouldn?t sleep with me when we
first met. She also said to tell you that she's perfectly happy where
she is at the moment, thank you very much.

* This Deluxe Edition was released on a double vinyl 180-gram gatefold
LP on 3 December 2012 (MOVLP663).
Sleevenotes:
Hmmm, let's see... 'His 'n' Hers' was started in the late summer of 1993
at Britannia Row studios in Islington. It was our first major label
album so we were all very excited about doing something 'proper' at
last. The studio had a house that bands could stay in whilst recording
so I finally got to live out my Monkees fantasy, tho' I seem to remember
that it soon disintegrated into a student-house hell kind of scenario
(just like any house I've ever lived in, I suppose). I think the studio
was owned by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd at the time and there seemed to be
some inflatable figures left over from 'The Wall' stuffed into an
out-house round the back - which was exciting.
I can't remember much about the recording process except that we decided
to make things extra-difficult for ourselves by converting the
table-tennis room into a make-shift film studio in order to make a
documentary to go along with the song 'Do You Remember The First Time?'.
So, whilst Ed Buller was struggling manfully to make us sound palatable,
we kept nipping off to ask the likes of John Peel, Viv Stanshall,
Justine Frischmann, Terry Hall, Pam Hogg, Jo Brand & Vic 'n' Bob
about their first sexual experiences - better than talking about hi-hat
sounds all day.
The only real problem we had was when I thought that I had summoned up
the Devil by means of an analogue synthesiser. Let me explain: Ed Buller
had this big old modular synth and I was trying to find some kind of
ambient noises to go on the track 'Acrylic Afternoons'. After an hour or
so of plugging and unplugging various leads and twiddling some dials I
found this quite spooky, self-generating noise that I was quite pleased
with. I left it playing and then went to have dinner with the others.
With the sound still playing in the background the atmosphere around the
dinner-table was a little subdued but I thought nothing of it. The real
trouble started later after we'd put it to tape - lots of equipment
started malfunctioning, a tape reel broke and I became convinced it was
all down to 'The Tones of Evil', as the sound was now known. Things kept
going wrong until I was moved to ask Ed to erase the said sound in order
to break the curse that seemed to have descended on us. The tape-op
attempted to do this but only succeeded in erasing another track instead
- 'The Tones' did not want to die! Eventually we managed to erase the
right track but, to this day, I believe you can discern their faint echo
at the start of 'Acrylic Afternoons' if you turn it up very loud. After
this occurrence the rest of the album was finished without incident.
(Except me and Steve got beaten up after walking home from Select
magazine's Christmas party. Goodwill to all men!... and maybe Nick bust
his hand at the same event; it was the first time we'd been to a party
with free drink).
'Do You Remember The First Time?' came out before the album and limped
into the charts at no.36 or something. But then the album got to no.9
and 'Babies' got re-released and was a real top-twenty hit and
everything. I remember being on the tour-bus when we found that out and
Mark Webber put 'Here Comes Success' by Iggy Pop on the stereo and we
all danced about on the hard shoulder for a bit.
Little did we know what was to come...

Sleevenotes:
"Your Sister's Clothes" features the sisters from "Babies" four years
on. Now the younger sibling finally gets her revenge for earlier years.
"Seconds" explores the idea that perfect people are... well, perfectly
boring to be honest whilst "His 'n' Hers" is one man's fear of domestic
interiors set to music. What are you frightened of? (And remember -
shove it in sideways).
